In 2009, Be A Jewel was first founded to raise money for S.H.A.R.E. in Africa, a non-profit organization seeking to provide equal education opportunities for young women in Tanzania by partnering with a school in the area and providing books, school supplies, and scholarships. Our founder, Rae Conklin, became an active member of the S.H.A.R.E. in Africa pen pal program and was moved by the letters she received from her new friends from overseas. The first pieces she ever made were 2 dozens bracelets for the girls in the pen pal program. Soon after, the headmistress of the school sent back a picture of the girls, beaming and brandishing the bracelets. This was the start of Be A Jewel.
